Bass River State Forest
The Bass River State Forest was the first State Forest that was established in 1905. It is located in Tuckerton, New Jersey. Bass River State Park was home to one of the many CIvilian Conservation Corps camps in New Jersey. Company 225 was there from 1933-1937 and Company 2201-V, which consisted of Veterans, was there from 1937-1942. The CCC built trails, roads, ponds, shelters, picnic areas, recreational lakes, etc. and performed landscaping. Many of these projects are still present today and used by the public. The biggest project of the CCC was the Lake Absegami. The lake alone is sixty-seven acres; this was done by damming two sides of a steam that ran through the forest.
